What breed of dog can herd fish like a border collie herding sheep?
What breed of dog can pick up articles off the sea bed that have been
accidently dropped overboard?
What breed of dog can take out fishing nets and move sea buoys?
This is of course, the Portuguese Water Dog!
On the edge of extinction 35 years ago, this ancient breed that sailed with the Spanish Armada has now got a successful foothold in Australia where breeders are continuing the work to re-establish them.
They look similar to a poodle, with a coat that continues to grow as is considered hyper-allergenic. They are traditionally shaved from the last rib to the tip of their tail. This allows them to work more freely in the water, as they would have in the rough seas off the coast of Portugal in the old days. |

In Australia there are about 25 PWD's. Only the absolute best of these are being used to further the breeding program. Imports from England, the US, Canada, and Sweden have created a lovely gene pool to develop a strong foothold. All but one of the PWD's here are black. There is one brown bitch.
There are two coat types - wavy and curly. Both are considered correct. In Australia, we have more wavy than curly.
Health issues - all breeds and cross breeds of dogs have health issues. The PWD is no exception. Look out for PRA, HD, and juvenile cardiomyopathy.
Currently breeders in Australia are looking for people who are interested in helping to promote the breed and use responsible breeding practices to move positively forward. The breed has done very well here in the show ring, and is starting to enter the obedience and agility rings too. Most importantly they do make wonderful pets who show high levels of intelligence.
They are an active breed that loves to be with people, and will make the best use of your couch!
