JACK RUSSELL

dogs
The game, hardy, little Jack Russell Terrier take its name from the Rev. John (lack) Russell, a fox-hunting Parson who rode to the hounds in North Devon, England, until his death in 1888. He was obsessed with the development of an ideal terrier which would flush the fox from its haunts. The Jack Russell Terrier was preserved by working terrier enthusiasts in England and survived on its ability as a worker but is now a popular pet in many parts of the world.

To enable it to 'go to ground' and maneuver down fox holes the Jack Russell Terrier must be compact with a chest easily spanned by average size hands at the widest part behind the shoulders. Although originally bred for fox hunting, the Jack Russell is a versatile working terrier and has been used on farms to hunt rats, rabbits and other vermin.

The Jack Russell Terrier is bold and fearless, friendly but quietly confident, intelligent, assertive and very energetic, with a big need for regular exercise.

Although the Jack Russell Terrier appears to be the ideal size dog (25 cms to 30 cms) for suburban living and has an easy care coat, it is important to remember that it is a hunter with an instinct to chase small animals such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. Jack Russells can also be quite snappy with other dogs and it is not advisable to keep a lack Russell Terrier with another dog (regardless of breed) of the same sex. Children must be taught how to play correctly with the lack Russell Terrier and young children must be supervised.

A 'Jack' can also be very destructive if left unattended and unemployed! As a working dog it needs to have a job - digging is normal and common since it was originally bred to dig after quarry. Most behaviour problems are due to a lack of companionship, discipline, activity and exercise. Sitting on the couch all day is not in a Jack Russell's nature. A well-behaved Jack Russell Terrier is one that gets enough exercise, is well socialized, and has been trained. No matter how cute a pup may appear your lifestyle may not meet the needs of a Jack Russell Terrier.

'Jacks' come in three different coat types; smooth, broken, and rough (coarse, longer hair). All coats shed. The predominant colour must be white with black, tan or brown markings. The white coat allowed the hunter to readily identify the dog from the fox as it bolted from the hole.
